Coffee Table Dimensions: Height, Length and Distance from the Sofa
How do you decide a coffee table’s height, length and distance from the sofa? Sofa-to-table ratios from matching sets, plus how nesting, side and accent tables differ.

Ideal coffee table dimensions come down to three rules. The height should match your sofa’s seat height or sit a few centimeters below it, which in most living rooms means 40–48 cm. The length should be roughly half to two-thirds that of the sofa behind it. Between the sofa and the table, leave 40–50 cm in most cases: your knees fit comfortably, and your glass stays within easy reach.
The İmhotep dimensions below come from our product pages (width × depth × height, in cm); the general rules are widely used recommendations.
Coffee table dimensions: a quick reference table
A coffee table is the low table placed in the middle of a seating group, used for serving and for setting things down; its size isn’t decided on its own but by the sofa it stands in front of and the walkway around it.
| Dimension | Common recommendation | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 40–48 cm | Equal to the sofa’s seat height or 2–5 cm below it |
| Length | Half to two-thirds of the sofa’s length | The sofa it goes in front of |
| Depth | Usually 50–80 cm for a rectangular table | Distance from the sofa and walkway clearance |
| Distance from the sofa | 40–50 cm | Knee room and reach |
| Walkway around it | At least 60 cm; 75–90 cm for comfortable passage | The living room’s traffic path |
Coffee table height: how tall should it be?
A coffee table should be the same height as the sofa’s seat or a few centimeters lower, which is why most living room coffee tables fall between 40 and 48 cm. In that range, a seated person can reach their glass without leaning too far forward.
Before choosing a table, measure your sofa’s seat height: from the floor to the top of the seat, without compressing the cushion. İmhotep’s coffee tables, except for the Milton described below, also range from 40 cm (the large Bodrum) to 48 cm (the Lükens and the small Bodrum); most are 43–45 cm.
Coffee table length: half to two-thirds of the sofa
When a coffee table is roughly half to two-thirds the length of the sofa it goes in front of, the group looks balanced and people at either end of the sofa can reach it. In İmhotep’s sofa and coffee table pairs from the same set, this range holds for the long tables, while for tables whose width equals their depth the ratio drops below half:
| Coffee table | W × D × H (cm) | Sofa in the same set, width (cm) | Table length / sofa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verona | 155 × 92 × 43 | Corner sofa | — |
| Novel | 150 × 100 × 45 | Classic 240, Box Arm 244 | 61–63% |
| Louis | 150 × 100 × 45 | — | — |
| Arizona | 130 × 79 × 45 | Tufted 240 | 54% |
| Lizz | 130 × 80 × 45 | Wooden 240 | 54% |
| Elegance | 120 × 70 × 45 | 3 Seater 235, Wooden 240 | 50–51% |
| Prada | 120 × 80 × 45 | 3 Seater 240 | 50% |
| Lükens | 104 × 104 × 48 | Wooden 240, Leather Chesterfield 255 | 41–43% |
| Craft | 100 × 100 × 43 | 4 Seater 258, Wooden 265 | 38–39% |
| Venedik | 94 × 94 × 42 | 4 Seater 240, Leather Chesterfield 245 | 38–39% |
| Bodrum (large) | 80 × 80 × 40 | — | — |
| Bodrum (small) | 60 × 60 × 48 | — | — |
| Milton | 60 × 60 × 65 | — (tea table set) | — |
The chart shows two groups: tables that are wider than they are deep come in at 50–63%, and those whose width equals their depth at 38–43%. Tables with equal width and depth make up for their shorter length with depth: the top of the 104 × 104 cm Lükens Coffee Table is about 1.08 m², while that of the 120 × 80 cm Prada is 0.96 m². But a bigger surface doesn’t shorten the reach: people sitting at the ends of a long sofa stay far from the table, and a side table at each end closes that gap.

Shape: square, rectangular, oval or round?
Choose the shape based on how your seating is arranged: a rectangular table suits a straight sofa, while a square or round one fits more comfortably in front of the inside corner of an L-shaped sofa or between facing armchairs. Oval and round tops have no sharp corners, so they make it easier to get around in a narrow living room.
Among our models, the Elegance Coffee Table is rectangular (120 × 70 × 45 cm), while the Craft Coffee Table is square (100 × 100 × 43 cm).

Nesting, side and accent tables: what goes between armchairs
A coffee table sits in the middle of the seating group and offers a surface everyone can reach; side tables and accent tables are taller tables placed next to a sofa or armchair, close to arm height. What sets nesting tables apart is their construction: they aren’t a single table but a set that slides together and comes apart when needed.
Nesting tables
The pieces of a nesting set slide under one another and stand together like a single piece. The Verona Nesting Tables set consists of four tables, made entirely of solid kiln-dried spruce. The dimensions listed on the site are 60 × 40 × 63 cm; the largest table also comes with an extra tray for serving.

Side tables
A side table stands next to the arm of a sofa or armchair; its top should be close to arm height or a few centimeters below it. Our side tables range from 55 to 68 cm in height:
| Model | W × D × H (cm) |
|---|---|
| Lizz Side Table | 55 × 55 × 55 |
| Lükens Side Table | 58 × 58 × 60 |
| Louis Side Table | 50 × 50 × 65 |
| Novel Side Table | 50 × 50 × 68 |
Accent tables and tables between armchairs
An accent table is a light table with a small top, placed between two armchairs or next to one. The Şato Accent Table is an all-solid-wood example: the top is spruce, and the legs, shaped like a string of beads, are hornbeam. For a table between armchairs, the rule is simple: the top shouldn’t rise noticeably above the armrests, and it should be within reach from both seats. The armchair’s own dimensions are covered separately in our article on what a bergère armchair is.
The exception: the 65 cm Milton
At 65 cm tall, the Milton Coffee Table stands apart from the other coffee tables in the length chart above. It is part of the Milton Tea Table Set, alongside the Milton Armchair, and is suited to serving, so it’s better thought of as a tea table used with an armchair than as a low table in front of a sofa.
Placement: the rug, walkways and the TV unit
A coffee table should sit entirely on the rug, with a comfortable walkway around it and between it and the TV unit. The common advice is for the rug to hold at least the front legs of the seating and to be no shorter than the sofa; for a 240 cm sofa, a rug of around 200 × 290 cm does the job.
An example: the Prada 3 Seater Sofa is 91 cm deep. Place the Prada Coffee Table (80 cm deep) in front of it with 45 cm of space, and you get 216 cm from the back of the sofa to the far edge of the table. If the sofa and the TV stand are against opposite walls, adding a comfortable 75 cm walkway and the 48 cm depth of the Prada TV Stand means you need 339 cm between the two walls; if you narrow the walkway to the minimum of 60 cm, that drops to 324 cm. If your living room is narrower than that, a smaller coffee table or a side table is the better choice.
Lining up the table with the TV unit is covered in detail in our guide to TV unit dimensions, and choosing the sofa itself in how to choose a sofa set.
In short: a checklist before you buy a coffee table
To get the coffee table dimensions right, measure the sofa first, then the space between the sofa and the TV unit; choose the table to fit that space and the length of the sofa.
- Measure the length of the sofa; a rectangular table should be half to two-thirds of that. If you choose a shorter table, add side tables at the ends of the sofa.
- Measure the seat height; the table should match it or be 2–5 cm lower.
- Leave 40–50 cm between the sofa and the table, and at least 60 cm between the table and the TV unit.
- Choose a rectangular table for a straight sofa, and a square or round one for an L-shaped sofa or a group of armchairs; keep the table on the rug.

Frequently asked questions
How tall should a coffee table be?
In most living rooms, 40–48 cm is the right height. The benchmark is the sofa’s seat height: the table should match it or be 2–5 cm lower. The low end of the range is more comfortable with low, deep-seated sofas, and the high end with upright classic sofas. Most İmhotep coffee tables are 43–45 cm tall.
What size should a coffee table be?
A coffee table’s length should be about half to two-thirds the length of the sofa it goes in front of; for a 240 cm three-seater, that works out to 120–160 cm. Tables with equal width and depth may fall below this range, in which case it’s a good idea to add side tables at the ends of the sofa. Rectangular tables are usually 50–80 cm deep.
How do you choose a coffee table?
Measure the sofa’s length and seat height first, then the distance between the sofa and the TV unit. Choose the length to suit the sofa and the height to suit the seat; leave 40–50 cm between the table and the sofa and at least 60 cm of walkway around it. Pick the shape to fit your seating layout, and the wood color and material to match your sofa set.
Do you need a coffee table in the living room?
It isn’t essential. If the space between the front of the sofa and the TV unit can’t fit 40–50 cm of knee room and at least 60 cm of walkway on top of the table’s depth, a coffee table will crowd the living room; for an 80 cm deep table, that means 180–190 cm. In that case, a side table, a set of nesting tables or an accent table between the armchairs does the same job in less space.
What are nesting tables?
They’re a set of several tables in different sizes that slide under one another and nest together. When not in use, the set takes up no more room than a single side table; when guests come over, the pieces are pulled apart and placed in front of each seat. İmhotep’s Verona Nesting Tables set consists of four tables, made entirely of solid kiln-dried spruce.
Is a coffee table practical?
Yes, when it’s the right size: it gives everyone seated a surface within reach for serving, books and magazines. Models with drawers add storage too; the Arizona Coffee Table, for example, has two drawers on the front. A table that’s the wrong size, on the other hand, narrows the walkway, and knees end up bumping into it.
