Entryway Decorating Ideas: Console, Mirror, Bench and Pouf

From narrow entryways to wide halls: how deep should a console be, where does the mirror go, bench or pouf? An entryway decorating guide by the numbers.

Entryway decorating comes down to four core pieces: a slim entryway console against the wall, a mirror above it, a bench or pouf to sit on while you put on your shoes, and good lighting. The entryway is the area you step into from the front door, which opens onto the rest of the home. When choosing these pieces, the first measurement to check is the walkway left over once the furniture is in place; for comfortable passage, that clearance is generally recommended to be at least 90 cm.

How to decorate an entryway: measure first, then choose pieces

Entryway decorating starts with a tape measure: note the width, the door's swing area, the outlets, and fixed obstacles such as the fuse box or a radiator. A hall is the wider area past the entrance that opens onto the rooms; the same rules apply to entryway and hall decorating.

  • Entryway console: A narrow surface for keys, mail and a lamp; the entryway's main piece of furniture.
  • Mirror: For a last check before you head out and a sense of depth in a tight space.
  • Bench or pouf: For sitting down to put on or take off shoes and for setting down a bag.
  • Lighting: A table lamp or wall sconce in addition to the ceiling light.
  • Shoe and coat storage: If there is no separate closet, a slim shoe cabinet or a wall-mounted coat rack; its depth counts toward the same clearance calculation.

The clearance math is simple: subtract the furniture's depth from the entryway's width, and don't let what remains drop below 90 cm.

Narrow entryway or wide hall: how deep should the console be?

The depth of an entryway console is chosen based on the space left after you set aside 90 cm for the walkway. An entryway console is a narrow table with drawers or shelves placed against the wall in entryways and hallways. How it differs from a console and its standard dimensions are covered in detail in our console, entryway console, sideboard and display cabinet guide. Below are the three entryway consoles whose dimensions are listed on İmhotep's product pages, along with the narrowest entryway width each one fits.

ModelDimensions (W × D × H)NoteMinimum entryway width (depth + 90 cm)
Bodrum Entryway Console130 × 35 × 95 cmMade entirely of oak125 cm
Louis Entryway Console140 × 40 × 93 cmThe widest of the three130 cm
Lükens Entryway Console130 × 44 × 80 cmLükens legs, carved apron; black paint, misted finish134 cm

You can see the Bodrum, Louis, Lükens and Eve models side by side on the İmhotep entryway console models page. If the door swings toward the console, you need more clearance than the table shows. If the entryway is narrower than 120 cm, the same math says the console should be no deeper than 30 cm: a 115 cm entryway fits a console no more than 25 cm deep or a wall-mounted shelf, and below 110 cm a mirror and a sconce alone are the better choice. Pieces with slim legs and an open base keep the floor visible, which makes the space feel more open. In a wide hall, a 130–140 cm console flanked by plants balances the empty space.

Entryway mirror ideas: what size and where to hang it

An entryway console mirror should be roughly two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the console, with its bottom edge 15–25 cm above the top. These proportions are not a strict standard; they are practical measurements that come up often in decorating guides.

  • Width: For a 130 cm console, a mirror about 85–100 cm wide works well. A mirror wider than the console makes the piece look squashed from above.
  • Height: The center of the mirror usually sits 145–160 cm off the floor, roughly average eye level.
  • Console-to-mirror gap: With a 15–25 cm gap, the mirror and console read as a single unit. Place a tall lamp beside the mirror, not in front of it.
  • Narrow entryway: A tall rectangular or full-length mirror makes a hallway look longer and brighter.

Before hanging the mirror, check what it will reflect: a mirror that reflects a window or a light brightens the entryway, while one that reflects a closet door makes it look cluttered. İmhotep's entryway console product pages do not include a mirror; you will need to choose one separately to suit the console's width.

Bench or pouf for the entryway? Seating dimensions

A bench works better in a wide entryway and in homes where several people get ready at the same time; a pouf is more practical in a narrow entryway or for one person. A bench is a long seat without a back; a pouf is generally a small, backless seat for one that is easy to move around. The dimensions below come from İmhotep's product pages.

SeriesBench (W × D × H, cm)Pouf (W × D × H, cm)
Versa115 × 34 × 4738 × 38 × 48
Venedik140 × 43 × 4643 × 44 × 43
Louis150 × 40 × 3660 × 45 × 45
Lükens140 × 42 × 4641 × 41 × 48
Elvin165 × 48 × 4840 × 40 × 45
Prada—43 × 40 × 45
  • Bench: 115–165 cm wide, 34–48 cm deep, 36–48 cm high. The shallowest is the Versa Bench at 34 cm; by the same 90 cm rule, it suits a long entryway at least 124 cm wide. These benches were designed for bedroom and dining room sets; the ones whose depth fits can be used in an entryway too. The Louis Bench is the lowest at 36 cm; if you will sit while putting on shoes, 45–48 cm models are usually more comfortable.
  • Pouf: 43–48 cm high. This figure is the pouf's overall height; when trying one out, choose the height at which your knees bend at roughly a right angle. Place the pouf beside or under the console, not in front of it, so it stays out of the walkway.

If you put the console and the bench on opposite walls, the walkway narrows by the sum of both depths: to use the Bodrum Entryway Console across from the Versa Bench, the entryway needs to be at least 159 cm wide. In a narrower entryway, pick one of the two, or use a pouf that slides under a console with an open base. If you want a bench and pouf that match like a set, the product pages for the Venedik Bench and the Venedik Pouf list the same features: both are made of kiln-dried hornbeam, with the wood painted cream using the patina technique, and upholstered in gray linen-textured fabric with tufting. For all the options, see the bench models and pouf models pages.

Country and classic entryway decorating

A country entryway uses natural wood, light paint, baskets and ceramics to create a warm, casual welcome; a classic entryway brings a more formal feel through symmetry, a framed mirror and glossy surfaces. The origins and interpretations of country style are covered in our country style furniture guide.

İmhotep's entryway design renders show both approaches. In the country example, under a ceiling with wooden beams, a niche between white paneled cabinets holds an entryway console with turned legs, two round mirrors and wall sconces; wicker baskets serve as both decor and storage. In the classic example, a long hall features a white console with gold details, a large mirror with a scalloped frame and candlesticks.

Lighting, walls and accessories: how to style an entryway console

For entryway console decor, a lamp, two objects of different heights and a small tray are enough; leave part of the top clear, because in an entryway this surface is used every day for dropping keys and bags.

  • Light: Supplement the ceiling light with a table lamp on the console or sconces on either side of the mirror. Warm white light (2700–3000 K) makes the entrance feel more inviting.
  • Three objects: Three pieces of different heights, such as a lamp, a vase and two stacked books, look tidier than lots of small objects.
  • Under the console: A wicker basket or two makes room for shoes and umbrellas.
  • Walls and floor: In a narrow entryway, light-colored walls and a slim runner that doesn't catch on the door make the space feel more open.

Quick summary: in what order should you set up an entryway?

Entryway decorating starts with measuring and ends with accessories: measure first, then choose the console, the mirror, the seating and the lighting, in that order.

  1. Measure the entryway's width and the door's swing area.
  2. Based on the remaining space (entryway width minus 90 cm), choose a console or just a shelf.
  3. Keep the mirror narrower than the console and hang it 15–25 cm above the top.
  4. Add a bench if there is room; otherwise, a pouf.
  5. Set up the lighting and decor last.

Frequently asked questions

How far should a mirror be above an entryway console?

The bottom edge of the mirror usually sits 15–25 cm above the console top. In this range, the mirror and console read as a single unit. If the gap goes beyond 30 cm, the mirror can look disconnected on the wall; below 10 cm, objects on the top may block the lower part of the mirror. The center of the mirror is usually placed 145–160 cm off the floor, at eye level.

What size mirror goes over an entryway console?

The mirror should be roughly two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the console. A mirror 85–100 cm wide looks balanced over a 130 cm console, and one 95–105 cm wide over a 140 cm console. Height is more flexible; in narrow entryways with high ceilings, a tall rectangular or oval mirror makes the space look taller.

How do you decorate an entryway console?

A lamp, two objects of different heights and a small tray for keys are enough for most entryway consoles. Rather than spreading objects across the top, balance tall pieces on one side with low pieces on the other, and leave part of it clear. Wicker baskets underneath make room for shoes and umbrellas.

What furniture fits in a narrow entryway?

An entryway narrower than 120 cm fits a console no deeper than 30 cm, a wall-mounted shelf, or a single pouf that slides under the console when not in use. The math is simple: subtract the furniture's depth from the entryway's width, and at least 90 cm of walkway should remain. That is why a 35 cm deep Bodrum Entryway Console needs an entryway at least 125 cm wide.

Bench or pouf for the entryway?

A bench is the better choice for a wide entryway and for homes where several people get ready at once; a pouf suits a narrow entryway and single use. İmhotep's benches range from 115 to 165 cm in width and 34 to 48 cm in depth; the six poufs in the table range from 38 to 60 cm in width. Because a pouf is small, it can also be moved to another room when needed.
