What Is a Chesterfield Sofa? Tufting, Leather and Fabric Options
The four features that define a chesterfield, how button tufting is pulled in with cord, choosing between leather and fabric, and the living rooms this sofa suits.

A chesterfield sofa is a classic English design recognized by its button-tufted back, arms that roll outward and an armline that ends at the same height as the back. In Turkey it also goes by the short name “chester koltuk” (chester sofa). Its traditional covering is leather, but fabric and velvet chesterfields are also widely made today.
What is a chesterfield sofa? Four defining features
What makes a sofa a chesterfield is the combination of four features: button tufting, rolled arms that curve outward, arms and back that end at the same height, and a low, well-padded body.
- Button tufting: The back carries a deep diamond pattern pulled in with buttons; on many models the tufting extends to the arms and the front apron as well.
- Rolled arms: The arms roll outward like a scroll; seen from the front, the end of each arm traces a rounded line.
- Arms and back at the same height: On traditional models the arms and back finish at the same height, wrapping the seat like a continuous frame.
- Low, well-padded body: The back is lower and more upright than on many sofas, so on a chesterfield you sit upright and composed rather than stretch out, and if you sit for long periods, a throw pillow can give your back extra support. The body sits close to the floor; short wooden legs or casters are common, as is a row of nailhead trim (decorative studs) along the front of the arms.
On most of today’s models, though, the seat is made up of plain, untufted cushions.
What is tufting, and what is a tufted sofa?
Tufting is the raised, patterned surface created when the upholstery fabric or leather is fastened, together with the padding underneath, at set points with buttons or stitches; a tufted sofa is simply a sofa upholstered with this technique. The fastened points sink in, the padding between them puffs up, and a diamond or square pattern emerges.
- Button tufting: Every recess holds a button. It creates a deep, shadowed texture and is the chesterfield’s signature. When people say “button-tufted sofa,” they usually mean a model upholstered this way.
- Stitched tufting: The pattern is formed by lines of stitching instead of buttons. It gives a softer, simpler surface and is common on headboards and on pouf and bench seats.
How is hand-pulled tufting done?
Hand-pulled tufting, also called hand tufting, is a handcrafted method in which each button is drawn back and secured with a cord threaded through the upholstery. The steps usually go like this:
- The button positions are marked on the padding in a diamond layout.
- Each button is attached to a cord that is threaded through the upholstery with a long needle.
- The cord is pulled from behind to the desired depth and knotted in place; the fabric or leather between the buttons folds into pleats.
If the tension isn’t even, the pattern shifts and the pleats look irregular. On İmhotep’s Chesterfield Sofa, Leather Chesterfield Sofa, Venedik Leather Chesterfield Sofa, Elvin Chesterfield Sofa and Chesterfield Armchair, the tufting is done this way, by hand; on the Lükens Leather Chesterfield Sofa, the tufting buttons are also prepared by hand.

Is every tufted sofa a chesterfield?
No. Tufting is an upholstery technique, while a chesterfield is a sofa form. On İmhotep’s Şato Tufted Sofa, for example, the tufting is on the arms; on the Louis Tufted Sofa, it’s on the sides and the back; and on the Arizona Tufted Sofa, it’s on the back. On these models, tufting is used as a detail, and İmhotep calls them tufted sofas, not chesterfields.
Leather or fabric? İmhotep’s chesterfield models
Leather is the chesterfield’s traditional covering, but the right choice depends on how you’ll use it: leather softens and gains character over time and can usually be wiped clean, while fabric offers a warmer touch and a wider range of colors. Here are the upholstery details and dimensions of İmhotep’s chesterfield models:
| Model | Upholstery | Dimensions (width × depth × height) | Standout detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chesterfield Sofa | Beige | 300 × 100 × 76 cm | Choice of wood and fabric colors |
| Leather Chesterfield Sofa | Black leather with a glossy finish | 300 × 100 × 76 cm | Brass casters |
| Venedik Leather Chesterfield Sofa | Genuine leather; deep green with a natural distressed effect | Width 245 cm, height 74 cm | Antique nailhead trim; dark walnut patina on the apron and legs |
| Lükens Leather Chesterfield Sofa | Genuine crackle-finish leather | 255 × 100 × 76 cm | Brass casters |
| Elvin Chesterfield Sofa | Leather in tan tones | 210 × 95 × 77 cm | Curved arms, brass casters |
| Chesterfield Armchair (single seat) | Tan, with a wavy, distressed-look texture | 105 × 105 × 78 cm | Brass casters |
All six models can be made in different colors: the Venedik and the Elvin come with wood and leather swatches, and the other four with wood and fabric options. Because color and texture vary from swatch to swatch, confirm the upholstery material and color with İmhotep before you order. Crackle-finish leather is leather whose surface has been given an aged look with fine cracks.

Leather vs. fabric: which suits whom?
- Leather: It’s the covering that gives a chesterfield its classic look directly; with use, it develops a worn-in character all its own. Sunlight and heat sources such as radiators can dry leather out.
- Fabric and velvet: Compared with leather, they generally feel cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Velvet brings out the shadows of the tufting.
- Pets: Cat and dog claws can leave marks on both leather and fabric; tightly woven fabrics and distressed-effect leathers generally show those marks less.
Whichever covering you choose, dust collects in the tufting recesses; regular cleaning with a soft brush or a vacuum’s upholstery attachment helps.
How a chesterfield is built: frame, foam and casters
The frame and foam determine how long a chesterfield lasts as much as the upholstery does, and often more; if the body flexes, the arm-and-back line and the tufting pattern can lose their shape over time.
- Kiln-dried hornbeam frame: All six chesterfield models in the table have frames of first-grade kiln-dried hornbeam. Kiln-dried wood is wood whose moisture content has been lowered in a drying kiln, which reduces the risk of the frame warping or cracking later on. Hornbeam is a hard, close-grained wood.
- 35-density foam: Density describes how heavy the foam is for its volume (kilograms per cubic meter). The same six models use 35-density foam; higher-density foam is generally more resistant to sagging.
- Brass casters: Brass casters, one of the chesterfield’s classic details, are used at İmhotep on the Leather Chesterfield Sofa, the Lükens, the Elvin and the Chesterfield Armchair.
What kind of living room suits a chesterfield sofa?
A chesterfield is most at home in classic and country living rooms, but its strong silhouette also lets it become the focal point of a modern one. Size is what really decides it: a 300 cm chesterfield needs a large living room, while a model like the Elvin, at 210 cm wide, fits more comfortably in a narrower seating area.
- Classic living room: It forms a natural whole with carved wooden tables and dark walnut tones.
- Country living room: A tan or green leather chesterfield strikes a warm balance with linen-textured fabric sofas and wood furniture. İmhotep’s Venedik and Elvin sofa sets are also designed in a country style.
- Modern or eclectic living room: Among plain walls and few furnishings, a single chesterfield carries the character of the room.
When you’re decorating a living room around a chesterfield, an approach that often works is to keep it as the only leather piece in the room and set plain fabric sofas and armchairs beside it; that lightens the look and lets the chesterfield stand out.

What pieces come in a chesterfield sofa set?
İmhotep offers three chesterfield sofa sets. The Lükens Sofa Set consists of a sofa with an exposed wood frame, a chesterfield sofa and two armchairs; the chesterfield sofa and the armchairs are upholstered in genuine crackle-finish leather. In the Venedik Sofa Set, the chesterfield is joined by a beige linen-textured four-seat sofa and two armchairs. The Elvin Sofa Set is made up of a chesterfield sofa, a linen-textured two-seat sofa and two armchairs in gingham fabric.
Armchair dimensions, the Chesterfield Armchair’s included, and the difference between a bergère (a classic upholstered armchair, berjer in Turkish) and a one-seater sofa are explained in our article on what a bergère is.
A short history: where does the name chesterfield come from?
The name is generally believed to come from an Earl of Chesterfield, though which earl is uncertain. As the story goes, Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, who lived in the 18th century, had a seat made so that gentlemen could sit upright without wrinkling their clothes; no known document confirms the story. Merriam-Webster, for its part, traces the word chesterfield, which means both an overcoat and a sofa, to a 19th-century Earl of Chesterfield.
Most sources agree that the deep-buttoned, heavily upholstered form became widespread in 19th-century Victorian England. Advances in sprung upholstery made the seat more comfortable and helped shape the form we know today.
A quick checklist for choosing a chesterfield
When you’re choosing a chesterfield, look at four things in particular: form, size, covering and construction.
- Form: Does it combine button tufting, rolled arms and an arm-and-back line at the same height?
- Size: Along with the sofa’s width, factor in the walkway in front of it and the 40–50 cm gap usually left between it and the coffee table.
- Covering: Decide between leather and fabric based on how you use the room day to day.
- Construction: Ask what wood the frame is made of, how it was dried and how dense the foam is.

Frequently asked questions
What is a chesterfield sofa set?
It’s a seating group built around a button-tufted chesterfield sofa and completed with armchairs and sofas in the same design language. In a typical arrangement, two armchairs sit beside or across from the chesterfield, sometimes along with a second sofa. Not every piece in the set has to be leather: in İmhotep’s Venedik and Elvin sets, the chesterfield is leather and the other pieces are fabric; in the Lükens set, the armchairs are leather too.
What is a tufted sofa?
It’s a sofa whose upholstery is divided into small sections with buttons or stitching to give it a raised pattern. In Turkish it’s called kapitone, from the French capitonné, which describes padded, sectioned upholstery. Tufting can cover the whole back or appear only on the arms or the sides. The depth of the pattern varies too: button tufting has deep recesses, while stitched tufting leaves a flatter surface.
What’s the difference between a chesterfield and a tufted sofa?
For a sofa to count as a chesterfield, three criteria have to come together: button tufting, rolled arms that curve outward and an armline that ends at the same height as the back. A tufted sofa doesn’t have to meet them; a sofa with straight arms, a high back or a carved wood frame can be tufted too. In short, a chesterfield is almost always tufted, but not every tufted sofa is a chesterfield.
Should a chesterfield sofa be leather or fabric?
It depends on how the living room is used. In a busy living room where food and drinks get passed around, leather, which usually just wipes clean, is practical, and the worn-in look it develops over time suits a chesterfield. If a soft touch and color variety matter more, fabric or velvet makes sense; darker colors and patterns that show stains less make things easier. In a sunny corner, leather can dry out and fabric can fade.
Which living rooms does a chesterfield sofa go with?
It looks most natural in classic and country living rooms, where it speaks the same language as walnut-toned wood, linen-textured fabrics and brass details. In a modern living room, it can stand alone as the focal piece among plain walls. In a small living room, a single chesterfield armchair gives the same character as a long chesterfield sofa while taking up less space.
